At Sana Wellness LLC you can find psychotherapy services in Spanish and English. Sana Wellness LLC recognizes psychotherapy as a valid and effective way to heal emotional wounds and to learn tools to deal with difficult situations that arise during life.
What is psychotherapy?
Psychotherapy is a process in which the therapist and client, and sometimes other family members, discuss a myriad of issues, events, experiences, and memories with the purpose of creating positive change so that clients can better understand themselves, as well as any problems or difficulties they may be experiencing.
Psychotherapy is a joint effort between the client and the therapist. Progress and success may vary depending on the particular problems or issues being addressed, as well as many other factors. Participating in therapy can result in a number of benefits for the client, including but not limited to reduced stress and anxiety, decreased negative thoughts and behaviors, improved interpersonal relationships, increased self-confidence; and increased comfort in social, school, and family settings. Such benefits may also require substantial effort on the part of the client, as well as their caregivers and/or family members, including active participation in the therapeutic process, honesty, and a willingness to change feelings, thoughts, and behaviors.
Who can benefit from psychotherapy?
People who are experiencing a mental health disorder can greatly benefit from psychotherapy. However, there are people who do not have a mental health disorder who also find benefits in psychotherapy because it helps people and their families learn tools to deal with life problems that are sometimes difficult to face and overcome.
Are people who receive psychotherapy services or who go to a psychotherapist crazy?
There is a belief that people with mental health disorders are crazy. However, it is important to dismantle this myth because this makes people not seek help due to fear or shame that a rejection by society or their relatives could cause them.
The reality is that people who develop a mental disorder are not crazy or possessed, nor do they have something defective that takes away their value as people. People who suffer from mental disorders are human beings who, like any other, deserve to be loved, respected, valued and who deserve to receive adequate help. People with mental disorders have a condition that, like physical illnesses, must be treated and a psychotherapist and/or psychiatrist, can guide their patient on what paths to take for their emotional healing.
What is a mental health disorder?
It is a condition that impacts people’s feelings, thoughts and/or behaviors in such a way that in some cases it affects their ability to perform tasks of daily living (World Health Organization, June 8, 2022). It can also impact their family, social, school or work life.
Some examples of mental health disorders are:
- Depressive disorders
- Anxiety disorders
- Bipolar disorders and related
- Trauma and stress-related disorders: post-traumatic stress disorder, adjustment disorders
- Eating disorders: bulimia, anorexia.
- Substance use disorders: addictions.
- Neurodevelopmental disorders: Autism, attention deficit disorder
- Schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders
- Sexual disorders
- Sleep disorders
- Personality disorders
- Impulse control disorders
- Neurocognitive disorders, among others
What are the causes of mental health disorders?
There are a large number of factors that can influence the development of a mental disorder. These factors include:
- Genetics
- Biological factors such as imbalances in brain chemicals
- Adverse experiences in the person’s life
- A brain injury
- Serious illnesses that can lead to mental disorders
- Family history
- Whether the person’s mother used drugs during pregnancy or if that baby was exposed to chemicals
- Alcohol or drug use (https://medlineplus.gov/spanish/mentaldisorders.html)
These factors can also determine the severity and chronicity of the mental condition. There are disorders that can be healed and there are others that certain people have to deal with for life. Just as it happens in physical illnesses, there are mental disorders that are serious and must be treated through hospitalization, there are some that require medication and there are other milder ones that can be treated without medication and with only psychotherapy outside a hospital.
